Abdul Hamid
Param Vir Chakra (1966, posthumous)
Valour 1933–1965Abdul Hamid was a soldier of the Indian Army. In the war of 1965 he destroyed Pakistani tanks at the Battle of Asal Uttar with a gun on a jeep. He was killed in the battle. He got the Param Vir Chakra after his death.
Neerja Bhanot
Ashoka Chakra (1987, posthumous)
Valour 1963–1986Neerja Bhanot was a flight attendant. In 1986 terrorists hijacked her aircraft at Karachi. She helped to save the lives of hundreds of passengers and was killed. She got the Ashoka Chakra after her death, the first woman to get it.
Premchand
Literature 1880–1936Premchand was a writer of Hindi and Urdu fiction. His real name was Dhanpat Rai Srivastava. He wrote about poor farmers, workers, women and the caste system. He wrote more than a dozen novels and more than 250 short stories.
Srinivasa Ramanujan
Mathematics 1887–1920Ramanujan was a mathematician with almost no formal training in pure mathematics. He found thousands of results in number theory, infinite series and continued fractions. Mathematicians use his work today in number theory and physics.
