Dhawan advanced aeronautical research in India. He built research facilities at the Indian Institute of Science and led the Indian space programme.
Life and work
Dhawan joined the Indian Institute of Science in 1951. He built high-speed aerodynamics and boundary-layer laboratories there. He also built India's first supersonic wind tunnel. In 1972, he became chair of the Indian Space Research Organisation.
