Bhabha was a physicist and institution builder. He founded the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research and led it as its first director.

Bhabha joined the Indian Institute of Science in 1940. He led its Cosmic Ray Research Unit. In 1945, he founded the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research. He served as its first director.
